Meet the man who brings a lifetime of adventure and accomplishments to Horry County classrooms.
How long have you been a teacher (overall and along the Grand Strand)?
I have been teaching for 26 years. This is my 7th year in HCS. My previous teaching career was in Virginia.
How long have you been at your current school and what grade do you teach?
This is my first year at NMBMS. I teach ELA 7. My prior years for HCS were at Conway Middle School.
What led you into teaching and what continues to motivate you?
I was motivated to teach because I wanted to think of what I could do to spend as much time as possible with my kids. Teaching afforded me that opportunity. Plus, I always loved education and helping people.
What was your reaction to winning the award?
Honestly, I was shocked. I just try to do my job to the best of my abilities. I am accountable for a lot of young people. Receiving an award like this humbles me and energizes my purpose.
What was the reaction of your class?
They were excited and glad for me. I got a resounding round of applause.
Have you been to Sky Zone before? If so, what was your experience like?
I have not. The last time I was on a trampoline was in college. Being foolish, I was trying to jump as high as I could. I wound up launching myself off the trampoline and suffered a concussion and bruised shoulder. Embarrassing, but true.
What do you find most rewarding about being a teacher?
When students say that I made a positive impact on their learning and their life. Most notably, I have had many former high school students contact me on social media telling me how much I had a positive impact on them. That’s what matters. Content? Of course. Relationships? Priceless.
Outside of the classroom, what are some of your interests?
My wife and I love to go camping in our RV. We have a saying, “You, Me, and the Dog.” We love to visit our kids when we get the opportunity. Almost anything outdoors: beach, biking, running, golfing, nature walking. you name it.
