2026-27 September Teacher of the Month
Sky Zone Myrtle Beach kicks off each school year with the Teacher of the Month program. The first winner is Kim Butts of Pine Island Elementary School.
Teacher of the Month
How long have you been a teacher? I have been teaching for 36 years. All those years in Horry County.
How long have you been at your current school and what grade do you teach? As you know, Pine Island Elementary is a new school. I help open the school. I currently teach 5th grade. Previously I was at River Oaks Elementary, in which I also taught 5th grade.
What led you into teaching and what continues to motivate you? It seems that I have always wanted to be a teacher. As a young child, I would play school. I would make all my friends play, including my brother. Later, as I went through school, I had some amazing teachers that provided me with the support I needed. These teachers motivated me to become a teacher like them. I am still motivated 36 years later to watch students have that special moment of the light bulb turning on.
What was your reaction to winning the award? I was very surprised! At first, I didn’t know who was coming to my class to visit. Then, after I was told. I was in awe! I couldn’t believe that my students thought that much of me to nominate me for the teacher of the month!
What was the reaction of your class? My class was yelling, screaming, and clapping. Some were yelling, “I knew it!” They were super excited. They wanted me to open the basket right then!
Have you been to Sky Zone before? If so, what was your experience like? No, I haven’t but my students wanted me to meet them and enjoy the fun!
What do you find most rewarding about being a teacher? The most rewarding part of teaching is seeing students never giving up and finally are rewarded with understanding. It touches my heart that I can be a positive influence on their education.
Outside of the classroom, what are some of your interests? I like to swim, read, and go to the beach, and hang out with my husband at Jeep events.
